What Are Spiritual Gifts?

Unlike talents, which are natural abilities developed through practice, or strengths, which may come easily to you, God’s spiritual gifts are specific, divine empowerments given for His purposes. You can’t earn them, train for them, or take credit for them—they are purely gifts, chosen and distributed by God according to His plan for your life.
Your relationship with God is the key to discovering and walking in the spiritual gifts He’s placed within you. Although two people may have the same gift, how those gifts function will be unique, based on each individual’s calling and assignment.
Why We Need One Another
One of the beautiful truths about God’s spiritual gifts is that no single person has them all. Just like the human body is made of many parts, each with its own function, the Body of Christ is made up of many believers, each operating in different gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7). We are designed to operate in unity, supporting and serving one another with the gifts we’ve been given.
As you deepen your relationship with God, your spiritual gifts will become more evident. It’s essential not to compare yourself to others, but to appreciate that your gifts were chosen specifically for you. They are tailor-made to help you fulfill the purpose God has for your life.

How to Embrace God’s Spiritual Gifts
God created you fearfully and wonderfully (Psalm 139:14), and His gifts in you are intentional and purposeful. When you begin to embrace God’s spiritual gifts, you gain clarity about your identity and your role in His Kingdom. These gifts are not only part of your personal development—they’re foundational to how you live out your faith and impact the world around you.
Here’s how to begin:
- Take a Spiritual Gifts Test
Begin by taking a test to identify your top spiritual gifts. Be honest with your answers—not who you wish to be, but who you actually are. Tests are tools, not definitive answers, so pray and seek God for confirmation afterward. - Reflect and Pray
After getting your results, read the descriptions of your top 3–4 gifts. Write out what each gift means and reflect on where you see that gift currently operating in your life. Spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal how He wants you to use these gifts in your family, community, workplace, and daily life. - Understand the Season
You may notice some gifts become more prominent in certain seasons. That’s okay—God’s spiritual gifts are dynamic, and He uses them as needed for the assignment at hand. Be open to shifting and growing as He leads you. - Use Them Beyond the Church
Your gifts are not just for ministry inside the church walls. They’re for every area of your life. Whether you’re parenting, working, leading, or serving, God’s gifts in you are meant to shine everywhere you go.
