Should you be doing a morning routine to start your day on the right foot?

Absolutely. It’s important to be intentional about how you start your day. A solid morning routine can be especially useful for those of us who are not “morning people” but still have to get up early. I believe those first 10 minutes, when spent with God, can help you get your heart and mind aligned with His, setting the tone for the rest of your day.

Why Should I Have a Morning Routine?

Let me start off by saying: I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON! I hate waking up to an alarm, and I’m often grumpy when the day starts—especially before 7:00 AM. My husband, on the other hand, loves waking up early. He’s one of those people who even wakes up earlier on gym days! I’ve been known to snap a little if he says the “wrong thing” too early in the morning.

But here’s what I’ve noticed: if I don’t start my day with God, the whole day just feels off. When I made the shift to include a morning routine focused on God, I began to see a real change. Even if everything didn’t go perfectly, I had a better mindset and felt more grounded. Those 10 intentional minutes have become a daily habit that transforms how I show up in the world.

I’m sharing my 10-minute morning routine with you to help you start your day with purpose and peace. These simple steps can create a powerful rhythm that anchors your heart in God’s truth and strengthens your mindset for whatever lies ahead.

Steps of the Routine

Step 1: Thank God

Start by thanking God for another day of life. A grateful heart invites His presence into your day. Don’t rush through it—take a moment to truly acknowledge God for who He is and what He’s done in your life.

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.”
—Psalm 5:3 (NKJV)

Step 2: Read and Meditate on Scripture

Next, choose a verse or passage to meditate on. Whether you follow a devotional, read a Psalm, or search scriptures about a topic that’s been on your heart, this is an essential part of a meaningful morning routine. Let God speak to you through His Word.

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…”
—Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)

Step 3: Spend Time in Prayer

Use the next few minutes to pray. Keep it simple. Talk to God about your day, your family, your thoughts—whatever is weighing on your heart. Remember, you’ll continue the conversation with Him throughout the day. This prayer time just sets the tone.

“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers…”
—Ephesians 6:18 (NLT)

Step 4: Affirm Yourself

Finish your morning routine by affirming who you are in Christ. Speak God’s truth over yourself out loud. This daily practice is powerful for renewing your mind and combatting negative self-talk. Writing your affirmations the night before can help you stay focused and consistent.

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”
—Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)

Preparing Your Morning Routine

Before you go to bed, take a few minutes to plan your morning routine. This is especially helpful if you struggle with mornings. Write your steps in a journal, sticky note, or even a digital note—just be sure it’s easily accessible. Resist the temptation to check emails or social media first thing. Let God be the first voice you hear.

Since I’ve made my morning routine a consistent habit, I’ve seen real changes. I’m more patient, more joyful, and better equipped to handle the challenges of the day. It’s not about perfection—it’s about connection.
