Should you be doing a morning routine to start your day on the right foot?
It’s important to be intentional about how you start your day. Having a morning routine can be useful for those that are not “morning people” but still have to get up early. I believe those first 10 minutes, when spent with God, can get your morning going in the right direction and help you to have a better day.
Why Should I Have a Morning Routine?
Let me start off by saying that I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON! I hate waking up to an alarm and I am grumpy in the mornings. Especially if I am waking up before 7:00. My husband on the other hand loves getting up early, and even earlier on the days he goes to the gym.
I have been known to be a little snappy some mornings if my husband says the “wrong thing”. I’ve also noticed that if I don’t start my day with God I sometimes struggle throughout the day or things feel “off”.
When I made a change to my morning routine I noticed that my days would be better or I would at least have the strength to make it through the day with a better mindset.
I’m sharing with you what I do the first 10 minutes of every day that helps me start the day off right. It is important for me to spend that first 10 minutes with God and make sure my inner dialogue is correct.
Steps of the Routine
Step 1
The first thing you should do every morning when you wake up is to thank God for giving you another day of life. We know that not every day is guaranteed, so I find it necessary to thank God for every day of life that is given. Take time to acknowledge God for who He is and spend a few minutes just thanking Him for what He has done in your life.
“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.” Psalm 5:3 (NKJV)
Step 2
The next thing you should do is choose some scripture to read and meditate on. Read through it a couple times and see what God is trying to say to you through His word. You can use a reading plan, a devotional, or just read a Psalm a day. It doesn’t matter what you choose, just read something.
You may choose to read a whole chapter or maybe focus on just one verse in that chapter. There might be a subject that you want to focus on that day so you can find a few scriptures related to that subject. The point is to spend some time in God’s Word.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
Step 3
After you have read some scripture, spend a few minutes in prayer. Don’t worry about getting every single prayer out for every person or situation. Remember that you should be talking to God throughout the entire day.
Pray for your day, pray for your family, pray for whatever is on your heart at that time. God wants us to speak to Him everyday, so make sure that you start your day with prayer.
“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” Ephesians 6:18 (NLT)
Step 4
The last thing you should do in those 10 minutes is that is affirm yourself. Take the time to speak the truth over yourself out loud. It is so important to remind yourself how incredible you are every single day.
The Word says to renew our minds daily, and that includes the thoughts you think about yourself. You can choose one thing to continually speak over yourself, or pick a few statements to speak over yourself. It could be helpful to write some affirmations down the night before so you don’t have to think when you get up.
“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.” Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)
Preparing Your Morning Routine
Before you go to bed, take the time to plan out those first 10 minutes of your day. This is especially important if, like me, you are not a morning person. You can write out each section on a piece of paper, keeping your notebook and your Bible within arms reach.
If you type it out in your phone make sure you go straight to the note section when you open your phone; don’t give into the temptation of checking your email or social media.
As I changed up my morning routine, I noticed that my day would flow better. I would be in a better mood and I was a kinder person to others. Do you have a morning routine? Tell us about it in the comments and let us know how it affects your day.
