Who does God say I am? Does it even matter if I know who God says I am? What difference will this make in my life?
The Word of God is filled with many scriptures telling us who God says we are. One of the first scriptures we see is Genesis 1:26, which says we are made in God’s image and His likeness. If we are made in His image and His likeness, then we are just like Him.
God is Spirit and He breathed His Spirit into us, so we are spirit first. We are a spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body. When God speaks to us He is speaking to our spirit, which is why we need to crucify our flesh and listen to what our spirit is telling us.
What does the Word say?
It is necessary to know who God says we are because He created each of us for a purpose. Jeremiah 1:5 (NLT) says, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”
When you know who God says you are, instead of letting the world tell you who you are, your life will change for the better. You will start seeing yourself differently, through a different lens.
Every book of the Bible tells us different facets of who God is and as we learn who He is we begin to learn who we are because we are made like Him. Here are a few examples of who God says you are. I encourage you to look up the meaning of each description to see what it actually means.
What does it mean to be a child of God? What does it mean to be an overcomer? To be chosen? Use your bible to read each scripture, but also use a Strong’s Concordance to read the definition of the words used. It is important to understand the intended definition of the word in the Greek or Hebrew versus using a regular dictionary.
I AM a new creature in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17, Colossians 3:10)
I AM a child of God. (John 1:12, Galatians 3:26)
I AM fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
I AM with the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16, Philippians 2:5)
I AM an overcomer. (1 John 4:4, Revelation 12:11)
I AM chosen. (John 15:16, Ephesians 1:4)
I AM precious. (Proverbs 31:10, 1 Corinthians 6:20)
I AM a conqueror. (Romans 8:37)
How do I learn who God Says I am?
It is important to spend time daily in the word of God and prayer. It is during that time, when we are reading the scriptures, that we learn about who does God say I am.
Before you begin to read ask the Holy Spirit to reveal things to you that you need to see. As you are reading don’t be afraid to mark things in your Bible. Use a pen or highlighter to circle things, underline things, or make notes.
I suggest always keeping a notebook with you during your time of study to write things down so you can refer back to it.
As you are reading His word and God says something about His people, receive that for yourself. You are His child, a part of His adopted family (Romans 8:15). If God says He is Abba Father, that means we are His children.
This means when God is talking to His children, you are one of the people that He is talking to. It is good to keep a running list of all of the ways that God describes us, His children. This will help you refer back to it if you are having a moment struggling to see yourself correctly.
Take some time to find out the answers to the following questions according to the Word of God. You might need do a search in Google to find the right scripture.
- What does it mean to be a conqueror?
- What does Abba Father mean in the concordance?
- What does God desire for His children?
- How do we get in relationship with God?
- What does God expect from us as His child?
As you are reading and answering these questions, I want you to think about how you view yourself versus the way God talks about you. How are they the same and how are they different? If your views of yourself are different than what God says, which one of you is correct? Why do you think you have views that are different from God?
What should I do now?
As you are starting to learn who you truly are according to God’s word, remember that you will have to renew your mind daily. The world will try to tell you lies about yourself. Only God can tell you who you truly are because He is your Creator.
Anytime one of those negative thoughts comes to your mind, take that thought captive and replace it with the truth. The truth is what the word of God says about you, and not what the world says about you.
Make a list of who God says you are, or a poster, or put it on post-its in a place that you will see every day. At the beginning of this process of learning who God says we are, it can be challenging at times to believe and accept those things He says about us.
This is why it’s important to renew your mind and keep His Word in front of you. Knowing who God says we are is one way to develop love for ourselves.
